The new Ford Mondeo will eventually be used to support four models in the series blue oval starting from 2014.
Mondeo (saloon and estate), the new S-Max and Galaxy replacement is expected to build the new Ford Edge SUV at its Valencia factory.
Ford has sold five-seat edge SUV in the United States since 2006. The current model is based on a Mazda CX-7 platform. But like the new Kuga SUV, the latest Edge becomes a global ' One Ford ' model and is based on the Mondeo platform.
Today's edge is the same size as the S-Max, signaling the likely arrival of a six-seat edge, which would place the brand in a thriving and profitable sector of the market. Skoda is also set to replace today's great flagship with a seven-seat SUV.
Build these big four cars at the same factory should allow Ford to run Valencia lines by near full capacity (to ensure profitability) as demand varies among the four models.
Ford also moving production of the family current Mondeo from Genk in Belgium to Spain, as part of an 18 percent reduction of production capacity in Europe.
Ford's European arm expects to lose £ 1.1bn this year.
