The JP Edition Genesis coupe

In anticipation of the 2013 SEMA show, Hyundai allowed tuner John Pangilinan to have his way with yet another of its progeny. The end result is the JP Edition Genesis coupe, a fat-fendered and carbon-fiber-laden Genesis coupe stuffed full of Alpine audio gear and bathed in a coat of custom Atlantis Blue paint. Hyundai has brought so many modified production vehicles to Las Vegas, it should really run a clinic; SEMA 101, if you will.

Before Pangilinan took the car for a spin on the color wheel, custom metal fender flares designed by Jon Sibal and sourced from TS Designs were fitted, as was an APR carbon-fiber splitter and Seibon carbon-fiber side and rear lip kits. Custom headlights arrived courtesy of The Retrofit Source. To ensure a tight fit in the wheel wells, a set of Mystic Black 19-inch MORR VS52 concave mono-forged wheels with T1R 275/30 ZR (front) and 315/25 ZR (rear) Toyo Proxes tires have been fitted. KW Variant 3 coil-overs, Whiteline sway bars, and an ARK Performance strut bar help make the most of the chassis, and a Brembo Gran Turismo brake kit with oversized 15-inch calipers provide the stopping power. Engine mods are right out of the SEMA for Dummies handbook (on the recommended-reading list for SEMA 101): an AEM cold-air intake, and ARK Performance exhaust and turbo downpipe.

Recaro seats upholstered with custom Katzkin suede and leather provide a stylish and supportive place to spend time, while Takata Drift III harnesses keeps occupants snug when they nearly wreck leaving a local cars and coffee event. A GoPro Hero 3 records it all for YouTube infamy.

The tunes come courtesy of Alpine, who provide a bunch of components with awesome-sounding alphanumeric model names, including: an INE-W927HD head unit, a SPR-60C component two-way speaker system, a pair of SWR-T10 10-inch subwoofers, an MRX-M55 mono power amp, and a MRX-F35 4/3/2 channel power amp.

If you’re thinking this thing is pretty restrained for a SEMA vehicle, don’t be discouraged; the tractor-tired, dynamite-powered econo-hatches aren’t revealed until right before the show officially starts.

Toyota’s upcoming fuel-cell vehicle could look like 2011′s FCV-R concept.

 

Toyota recently hosted a backgrounder event on its upcoming hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, which is due sometime next year as a 2015 model, and from it spilled a plethora of new information on the car. As reported by The Detroit News, the fuel-cell car (see how these setups work to create electricity here) will be relatively compact, feature gas-equivalent driving range, and is expected to cost around $50,000.

The yet-unnamed Toyota hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle will ride on a platform that straddles the compact and mid-size segments, apparently derived from the now-defunct Lexus HS250 hybrid‘s bones. This would make sense for a variety of reasons, not least because it gives Toyota a standalone platform to launch its hydrogen future from; also, the HS250′s profile seems eerily similar to that of 2011′s FCV-R concept, a Toyota show car with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain. We’d be willing to bet that car previews the production car’s look fairly accurately.

As for the car’s technical details, Toyota says the fuel-cell stack should be able to return more than 300 miles of driving range using about 11 pounds of hydrogen. Total system power should stand around 135 horsepower, so don’t expect the sedan to be speedy. Frugality will be the name of the game, a trait all the more important given the relative dearth of hydrogen refueling stations nationwide—even on the paradigm-pushing coasts. We’ll find out more about Toyota’s fuel-cell vehicle in the coming year, but until then, the automaker should hope more fueling stations appear. Otherwise, its big-dollar investment in environmental friendliness could be met by the car-buying public in much the same way as Honda’s FCX Clarity has been received: as a niche product for early adopters.

Toyota recalling 800k Camry, Avalon and Venza models for AC issue

 

Toyota has announced plans to voluntarily recall 803,000 vehicles from model years 2012 and 2013, over concerns with the air conditioning condenser housing. The recall covers the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Venza, although the exact split between affected models wasn't available.
According to Toyota, the condenser can leak onto an airbag control module, which in turn could cause a short circuit. In most cases, this will just lead to an airbag warning light, but in rarer instances, the airbags could fail to deploy or pop out of their own accord. There's also a concern over a loss of power steering if the airbag control module develops a short.
It's unclear if there have been any injuries or crashes relating to the defects. Toyota will begin informing owners of affected vehicles via first class mail, and will ask them to report to dealerships for recall work, involving the installation of a cover on the condenser housing.
